Open Layout; Why it's the Floor Plan of our Era

Before the war, the layout of homes was typically far more divided than what we see today. The kitchen was separate from the dining room, and this from the family room and living room etc.

Post war we began to see a change in how people wanted to live inside their homes. By losing walls and combining spaces together, it made it easier for people to interact with each other inside the home and families to be less isolated from one another. This one unified, highly functional space is referred to as an open floor plan or an open layout. It typically includes the kitchen, dining room and living room but can go beyond that. Today open floor plans have become mainstream and are the top selling layout for a home. So why has this style of living become so popular?

More Communication: The person cooking or cleaning inside the kitchen doesn't have to do so in solitude. They can now converse easily with others and be kept company.

Easier Supervision: Open floor plans allow parents to cook or do other household tasks while keeping an eye on their children.

Better for Entertaining: When guests arrive it's easier to keep everyone together. The party feels less divided between rooms and whoever is preparing food in the kitchen can entertain their guests while they do so. The addition of an island helps with this as well.

More Natural Light: Open floor plans allow light to travel between rooms. They also increase the amount of views that can be seen throughout.

Increased Space: Open floor plans create the illusion of more square footage in a home. By having less walls, the place feels more open and less confined.

Better Flow: An open floor plan makes it a lot quicker to travel from one room to another.
